Fall Creek Gardens, Indianapolis’ Urban Growers Resource Center, is offering workshops on composting with worms and cultivating mushrooms.
Worm Composting Workshop
October 15, 2011
1 to 2 p.m., Broadway United Methodist Church, 609 East 29th St.
Just in time for the winter season, Keith OâDell of Castaway Compost will join Fall Creek Gardens to lead a workshop on worm composting. The workshop will demonstrate:
- Why worm composting is a valuable, soil-building practice.
- How to compost inside without odor or mess.
- What kind of worms to use and what to feed them (for free!).
- Everything you need to know, from setting up a system to using finished compost.
Keith OâDell hails from Fishers, Ind., and he is happy to share his expertise in producing a fantastic soil amendment that not only provides slow-release nutrients to plants but also increases micro-organisms in the soil for better disease and drought resistance. Worm composting, or vermicomposting, is an easy way to recycle kitchen scraps and a great way to introduce children to composting.

Cultivating Mushrooms Workshops
November 12, 2011 (two workshops, beginner and advanced)
Beginner: 10 a.m. to noon. Broadway United Methodist Church, 609 East 29th St.
Advanced: 2 to 5:30 p.m., Rivera Club, 5640 N. Illinois St.
Join Eric Osborn with Magnificent Mushrooms at this unique Fall Creek Gardens workshop series.
The Beginner Workshop will provide an overview of mushroom species that can be cultivated on logs and stumps, such as Oyster, Reishi, and Shiitake to name a few. Osborn will discuss cultivation details as well as the health value and culinary preparation of each species. After a question-and-answer session, participants will take home either an oyster mushroom grow bag or a 100-pack of shiitake plugs.
The Advanced Workshop will include instruction on 10 varieties of gourmet mushrooms, their health benefits, and how to prepare them. In addition to cultivation techniques, Osborn will discuss how to incorporate mushroom growing in your landscaping, and the role that mushrooms play on a larger scale ecologically, such as myco-remediation. Participants will gain first-hand knowledge on inoculating (planting) the mushrooms of their choice, and will take home an inoculated log of Shiitake, Lionâs Mane, Reishi, or Turkey Tail and an indoor Oyster mushroom grow kit.
